Professor Peter Proud (Michael Sarrazin) is having nightmares. The same dreams night after night, and they are freaking him out. But are they dreams, or is he flashing back to a previous incarnation of his life? When he sees an infomercial advertising tourism in Massachusetts, he notices a landmark that keeps recurring in his dreams. In hopes of finding out what is going on, Peter drags his girlfriend to the Bay State. After a few days schlepping around the Pioneer Valley, he finds what he is looking for in Springfield (don’t we all) and the fun really begins.
After his girlfriend heads back to Florida, Peter finds out who he used to be and how he died. In the process, he falls in love with the daughter of his previous self (played by Jennifer O’Neill…and…ewww!) and sends his old self’s widower (played by Margot Kidder both as a young lady in flashbacks, and less convincingly as a lost middle-aged woman in the present) into a drunken, masturbatory stupor.
