A Harvard College student thinks he has a letter from George Washington that proves the American hero was actually loyal to the crown and the whole Washington story is a hoax. He tries to get the letter to a professor (Elliot Gould) and the shenanigans begin. Gould is chased by the FBI, the mafia, some other thugs, and a TV reporter (Kate Jackson), all looking for the letter and the story behind it. Will the professor and the reporter hook up? Of course they will…I mean, why wouldn’t one of Charlie’s Angels fall head over heels for Elliot Gould? Obviously! Is the letter real? You’ll have to watch to find out.
So, 2018 called 1981 and said, “If this is what passed for funny in your day, you can have your movie back.” The film is beyond politically incorrect, it’s down right offensive by today’s standards (I hope it was offensive by 1981’s standards, too, but I was 10 and not watching these movies). For instance, Gould and Jackson are in her apartment arguing about something, he gets all neurotic and punches her in the face, knocking her out. This is the funny part of the scene! Neurotic guy gets all punchy! Haw Haw! Beyond that, the final slap-stick chase across Harvard include the bad guys shooting up multiple classrooms, including a medical school class where med students treating shooting victims is part of the joke! Tee-hee-hee, school shootings for the win!
